Geoffrey Chaucer

(1342-1400)

English Author
A fundamental contribution to English literature...

Notwithstanding court poetry was still written in Anglo-Norman or Latin, this remarkable predecessor of Shakespeare, by writing his poetry in English, contributed crucially to the extension of the English language and litterature.

But unlike Shakespeare, this Londonian writer, the son of a rich merchant, learned Latin and Greek at school, was speaking French and Italian, and travelled around France and Italy where he probably met Giovanni Boccaccio, the famous author of The Decameron.

Indeed, being a member of the King's household, Chaucer was sent on diplomatic missions throughout Europe.
