Charles Darwin

(1809-1882)

English Author
The founder of the modern science of biology

Darwin is the grandson of Erasmus Darwin and the father of George Darwin.

Erasmus Darwin published Zoonomia in 1794-1796, in which he anticipated some of Lamarck's evolutionary theories, and two treatises on the evolution of higher animals from lower organisms.

His second son, George, was an astronomer and physicist.

To gather evidence for his theory of evolution of species, Darwin boarded the H.M.S. Beagle for a five years cruise around the world.

In the Galapagos Islands and along the coasts of South America, he observed how species changed. Back to England, he published his observations in A Naturalist's Voyage on the Beagle (1839).

His theory was set down after he had studied species for 30 years. For Darwin, life on Earth is constantly adapting over the generations, so as to enable organisms to survive.
