The father of Sherlock Holmes...

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Doyle is the descendant of an aristocratic and intellectual Irish family.



He graduated as a physician from the University of Edinburgh in 1885. One of his professors, Dr. Joseph Bell, was to serve as a model for Sherlock Holmes.


The creator of Sherlock Holmes, the world famous detective,served as a physician in the Boer War (1899-1902).


He published his first Sherlock Holmes tale, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887 and wrote a total of 56 short stories and four Sherlock Holmes novels over the following 40 years.


Later, Doyle had close interest in spiritualism and wrote A History of Spiritualism in 1926.
