Chinese Author
The Tao-Te-Ching

Scholars place the birth of Lao-Tzu between 600 and 300 B.C.E Lao Tzu means in Chinese the "Old Master" , an honourific title given to the author whose real name is unknown. Tao Te Ching means : Tao. "the way of all life" Te: "the fit use of life by men". Ching: "work or text" Lao-Tzu never wanted to set down his philosophy on writings, since he believed that written wits tend to turn to formal dogma, and always had wished a person's conduct to be governed by instinct and conscience. He wanted his philosophy to remain a natural way to live life with goodness, serenity and respect. For Lao-tzu, the course of the universe, including human lives, is influenced by external forces.

This ancient Chinese text is the world's most translated classic next to the Bible.
Legends say that in the end of his life, Lao Tzu, saddened by the evil of men, ran away into the desert on a water buffalo, leaving civilization behind. However, at the final gate of the great wall protecting the kingdom, the guardian persuaded him to record his philosophy for posterity. This is how the eighty-one sayings of the "Tao-Te Ching." came to the world.
