In 1929, Thomas Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature, principally for his Buddenbrooks
7 years later, the Nazis cancelled his German citizenship.
Flying away from Hitler, Mann took refuge first in Switzerland and then in the United States (1938) In 1953 he settled near Zurich, Switzerland, where he died.
